Selection Process

Once applications have been examined closely and checked to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria, they will be ranked according to each person's academic achievement and/or work experience (achievement only for graduate scholarships; both achievement and work experience for Career Change scholarships).

A panel will then consider and agree jointly on the ranking of applications. That panel typically includes the Manager TeachNZ, team leader TeachNZ, and a representative from Group Maori/Early Childhood Education or subject specialist from the Ministry. Then, starting from those with the highest ranking, scholarships will be awarded until all available places are filled.

In steps, the process will work like this:

  1. Check - does the person meet the eligibility criteria?
  2. Assess - the person's highest academic achievement and/or work experience
  3. Decide - where each person fits against other applicants who also meet the eligibility criteria, eg first ranked by qualification, marks achieved, then relevance of work experience, and years of work experience where applicable
  4. Confirm – selection panel will meet to consider the ranking of applications AND
  5. Award - starting from those with the highest ranking, award the scholarships until all the available places are filled.
