ECE curriculum

Children doing the dishesTe Whāriki – the early childhood education curriculum provides the basis for a consistent high quality curriculum for the diverse range of early childhood services in New Zealand.

The curriculum was developed in response to initiatives from the early childhood sector.  Services in this sector are diverse in terms of structure and philosophy, but early childhood education personnel worked together to develop a common curriculum on which to base their programmes.

There are four principles and five strands of the curriculum:

Principles
Holistic Development / Kotahitanga
Empowerment / Whakamana
Family and Community / Whänau Tangata
Relationships / Ngä Hononga

Strands
Well being / Mana Atua
Belonging / Mana Whenua
Contribution / Mana Tangata
Communication / Mana Reo
Exploration / Mana Aotüroa
