Become familiar with NCEA before coming to NZ
Rowan de Beer has adapted easily to teaching the new NCEA qualifications in New Zealand but advises prospective overseas teachers to become familiar with NCEA before coming here.

A new senior qualification called the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) was introduced into all New Zealand schools at level 1 in 2002.

For NCEA, students are assessed on National Standards which describe in detail what students must know or be able to do to indicate they have gained sufficient knowledge of particular topics within a subject.

A great deal of information for you about NCEA is on the Ministry of Education and Te Kete Ipurangi websites.

An on-line community has been created on Te Kete Ipurangi (The Online Learning Centre) website, where you can view assessment resources developed for use with NCEA achievement standards.
