Voluntary Bonding Scheme

The New Zealand education system needs an adequate supply of teachers across all schools and subjects. The Voluntary Bonding Scheme was introduced in 2009 to make sure there's a good supply of teachers for certain schools and subject areas. If eligible, teachers will receive an annual taxable payment of $3,500 for up to five years.

Eligible Schools

Payments will be made at the end of a teacher’s third, fourth and fifth year of teaching.

Eligible Subjects

There are no longer eligible subjects for the Voluntary Bonding Scheme.

Teachers who taught a subject that was eligible between 2009–2012 will still receive their next payment (the payment that they were working towards in November 2012), provided they are otherwise eligible.

Depending on the length of teaching completed by November 2012, payments will be made at the end of a teacher’s third, and potentially fourth year of teaching.

The first payments for teaching eligible subjects and schools were made at the end of the 2011 school year. Find out more about the scheme here.
